Lost 11k 2nd day of the year!

January 5, 2011 4 comments

What goes up must come down?

I guess for me this was true. I reviewed my play later and there really didn’t seem to be any huge mistakes. I definitely didn’t tilt, but just kept getting coolered or setups or other things where the timing was against me.

It’s really been a hectic start of the year for me, where huge swings seem to be the norm. Yesterday I played a guy deep at 2/4, where we had some pretty huge hands.

Thailand, poker and Full Moon Party

November 30, 2010 4 comments

Sorry for not updating the blog for two weeks. I’ve been having a blast here in Thailand. Enjoying the sun, eating thai curries and seafood every day, playing FIFA 11 with the boys and also finding some time for poker.

Poker has been going ok. Ever since I started playing 1/2 I’ve been doing well. I’ve been playing both regs and fish to try and get in more hands. I’ve also been pretty happy with my play. Luckily I’ve also had other good poker players to share thoughts and ideas with, which is helping me get over this plateau I feel I’ve been struggling at where my play wasn’t improving that much.

Heres a graph of my month so far.

The last two days have been quite the rollercoaster. I started playing some guy at 2/4 who seemed like a spewtard. Unfortunately I ran pretty bad and lost about 5-6 buyins to him at 2/4. Then my friend Danny, who’s a high stakes heads up pro sat down with me and gave me some advice while playing him commenting on hands etc. All of sudden we were raping this guy. Obviously we ran very good, set over setting him and hitting monsters all the time, ending up taking him for a nice amount.

My +1800 day, that had turned to a -2k day ended up a +5300$ day instead. I was over the top happy because I was less worried about being close to busto and what not. However things would take a change for the worse the day after, which was yesterday. I ended up losing approx 5k usd, 3k of which was to another spewtard reg who 3bet about 30% of his hands from the BB and hardly ever folded to 3bets. On top of that, he loved floating in 3bet abd 4bet pots. Altho he did start out outplaying me as I had to get used to his style, I ran bad against him in some important spots and ended up losing to him. I’m prolly gonna move back down to 1/2 untill I get the roll back up to about 14-15k.

In other news, Thailand is great. THe weather is really nice and sunny. There’s been some rain but its getting better and better. We’ve been here two weeks now, living in this villa overlooking the Tongsai Bay on Koh Samui, and the view is still as breathtaking as ever.

I’m enjoying my routine here. Getting up in the morning playing some poker till about midday, then going down to the beach for a swim and enjoying thai curries for lunch. After that its either more poker or going somewhere sightseeing. There doesn’t seem to be THAT much to see on Koh Samui so in a way it’s a waste to rent this house for two months, but on the other hand it forces us to play more poker than go check out the island every day.

The plan right now is to stay here on Samui for the two months and then travel around and see the rest of Thailand on our third month. I can’t wait to see Bangkok and Chang Mai. I’ve heard many good things about those places. However I hope to make some money on poker before going so taking a break from it won’t be a big deal.

We went to the world famous Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan two sundays ago. It was pretty sick. Imagine 15000 people partying on one big beach under a full moon. People were drunk out of their minds or high on “Happy Shakes”. A drink with mushrooms in it, which also was quite an overwhelming experience. Let me tell you right away if you’ve never tried mushrooms – Dont drink a Happy Shake all by yourself. Share one with someone and drink it slowly :)

I’ll write more about what all of us have been up to lately. For now, heres a video of some of the stuff going on at full moon party and a video of us arriving on Koh Samui.

Midweek of doubling my bankroll.

I haven’t had time to play that much because of visiting people and what not. Yesterday we spent most of the day taking care of visa issues, doing a little shopping and visiting some family friends.

Today I’m going to Niller’s daughters birthday. She’ll be six years old. She simply loves anything thats pink and “princessy”. Later I’m meeting up with some friends to “celebrate” the end of a bet. I had a propbet going with a friend of mine, Anders, who’s coming tonight, whether he could stay away from alcohol for a year. We bet 20k danish kr but could buy ourselves for half the amount before 6 months had passed.

Anyway, the lucky SOB went ahead and got himself a girlfriend so he just stayed home every weekend with her instead of going out, making my chances of winning the bet pretty difficult. So I’ve had to bite the bullet and buy myself outta the bet even tho Christmas is coming up and there’s going to be a lot of christmas parties where he’s going to be tempted. I figure that he’s done well for 6 months so chance of him going all the way now are more than 75%.

Not only am I running bad in poker but propbets too!

Heres an update of my monthly graph. Not much difference since I’ve moved down to 1/2, altho Im not running like apeshit anymore. Maybe when I win some more I’ll put up a graph in big blinds instead. Might be more motivating to look at :)

Week 2 of busting my bankroll challenge

November 9, 2010 5 comments

I had a few days off over the weekend and played again last night. I also spent my break looking through hands with my good friend Niller. He’s also a midstakes HU regular and is doing quite well this year. He didn’t feel that I was playing badly, altho we did discuss how my preflop tendencies are slightly different than his. It was good to get confirmation from someone else that I’m not spewing or tilting all over the place.

Obviously you’re always going to be making mistakes while playing poker. It’s all about learning from them and trying not to repeat them. Anyway, last nights session was going ok untill I started getting real unlucky against a random fish and he took me for 1300€ at 2/4.

At this point Im getting real low on bankroll to be able to play on as many sites as I’d like to and with enough buyins on each site, so I’m prolly gonna end up moving down to 1/2, which is something I used to swear that I’d never do. But maybe its time to be humble, not so much in regarding my skill, but to respect the fact that money can be made at 1/2 and it shouldn’t take me that long to bounce back if I just focus on playing well.

I’m obviously not going to be making 17k€ + my losses back from last week before heading down to Thailand, so it’ll be interesting to see what this week brings. I was going to put in a lot of hours but now I just need to focus on playing well. Even tho I know I’ve played fine, I can feel that I’m stressed by the thought of virtually being busto, but there’s noone really to blame but myself for it. Had my money management skills been a better in the past – I wouldn’t be in this situation to begin with. Having to withdraw 10k usd each month from a midstakes bankroll, is going to take its toll on it in the end.

Here’s a hand that I thought was interesting from yesterday. I was playing some regular at 1/2 heads up. The match started well with me getting ahead pretty fast. Villain is pretty nitty postflop tho and doesn’t make big moves or anything. He plays 59% from SB and 40% from BB. Has a 3bet of 14%. I had 4bet him 4 times before this time. This was the first time he called. Notice that we’re deep.

No-Limit Hold’em, $2.00 BB (2 handed) – Hold’em Manager Converter Tool from

Hero (SB) ($531.30)

BB ($443.45)

Preflop: Hero is SB with K, K

Hero bets $7, BB raises $22, Hero raises $42, BB calls $26

At this point I’m putting him on hands such as AQ+ and all pockets, except maybe AA or KK. I think that he would prolly min 5bet me with such hands because of the way he’s played before. We had a hand earlier where we we’re just 100bb deep and he min5bet my 4bet up to 50bbs with JJ.

Flop: ($100) 5, 10, 4 (2 players)

BB checks, Hero bets $46, BB raises $117, Hero calls $71

When he checkraises me on the flop, I’m putting him on 44, 55, TT, KK, AA – Possibly but not very likely JJ or QQ and some bluffs. This player  was quite nitty when putting a lot of money in the past. He’s not the type to triple barrel bluff, rarely double barrel bluffs, which is why suspected that I might be beat on the flop. I decide to call his small checkraise and re-evaluate on turn.

Turn: ($334) A (2 players)

BB bets $276.45 (All-In), Hero folds

On the turn I have him on much of the same range as on the flop, except that I doubt he would just jam in with JJ or QQ when the Ace hits. The fact that he’s not afraid of the Ace makes me believe that he actually did flop a set and possibly puts me on a hand like AK that got stubborn on the flop as I did tank a little bit before calling.  Now a lot of people would argue that I’m being quite nitty with this fold and 80% of the time I’m not folding KK on the flop with shallower stacks, but the turn card really made this decision a lot easier. Of course with stacks under 175bb I would just ship it in on the flop and hope for the best :)

Total pot: $334

BB didn’t show

Outcome: BB won $609.70

Here’s a graph of my month so far. I Hope I can turn it around soonish.

Day 2 – Double my bankroll in 2 weeks

November 3, 2010 4 comments

So I played most of yesterday. Got up around 9 AM and started opening up tables right away. I played most of the day untill about 5 pm. By that time it wasnt going so well and I needed a break.

I had lost all profits that I made the day before and was plunging into the red for the month. Not a great feeling. After quitting tables, I rested for an hour knowing that I need to be playing as much as possible and wanted to play later that evening.

An hour later, I decided to order my favorite pizza to cheer myself up a little. Turned out to be a really nice evening watching football while having some pizza. Barcelona had come to Copenhagen to play against the home team FC Copenhagen. The match ended 1-1. FC Copenhagen did a really good job against the skilled Spanish team. FC Copenhagen are in really good form and there’s a good chance they will make it to the 1/8 finals for the first time ever in the Champions League. This wasn’t a normal football match for the Danes, and everyone was following it much as if it was the Danish National Team playing.

After football I opened up tables again and played untill about 1 am. I kept losing getting it in good most of the time, but managed to recoup my losses at the very end. I’m pretty satisfied with my play so far. The most important thing for me is to play in a good emotional state and rested. That’s basically the best way I have a shot of reaching my goal. Everything else is variance.

Here’s a graph of the month so far.

I’m going to be playing all day today. I haven’t exactly done much prep work for this challenge, but going to spend the time between matches today to figure out the best diet for this challenge. Basically, I need to be able to focus for long as possible without getting tired. I’m thinking I need as few carbs as possible while taking supplements such as fish oil and vitamins.

If you, dear reader, have any tips for me, don’t hesitate to comment :)

Update on session and how I ran 6k under EV

May 19, 2010 Leave a comment

My session yesterday ended up fine. I did however manage to run 6k under EV.

I’m still pretty happy about my play. Towards the end I played against a guy who would just never fold and kept 3betting both preflop and post flop. At times he would openshove pre with mostly good ace highs. He however didn’t have any idea about how to handread so I just had to be patient untill I won all my money back and busted him.

Here’s the final hand I played against him with a graph for my session yesterday.

Hero (BB) ($2790)

SB ($767.40)

Preflop: Hero is BB with A, A

SB bets $764.40 (All-In), Hero calls $761.40

Flop: ($1534.80) Q, 7, 9 (2 players, 1 all-in)

Turn: ($1534.80) 5 (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: ($1534.80) 3 (2 players, 1 all-in)

Total pot: $1534.80

SB had 10, A (high card, Ace).

Hero had A, A (one pair, Aces).

Outcome: Hero won $1533

April results and how to run 10k above EV.

May 4, 2010 6 comments

April is over and it has been quite the rollercoaster ride. I’ve dumped a bit too much to certain opponents, which is why I’m going to really be strict with stop loss against competent opponents from now on.

Yes even seasoned pros sometimes suck at the most basic poker principles. I hope that I’ll be better at using stop loss to ensure better winnings overall in the future. I also played 48k hands last month which above average for me. Want to keep doing that in May as well. Heres a graph over my winnings last month.

Overall I feel that I’m playing well in most of my sessions and not letting myself get affected by results, which is crucial to having a solid winrate.

Other than that, there’s not really that much to report on the poker side of things.

I’ve had some computer problems lately because I’m opening so many tables, while having Holdemmanager running as well as Camtasia for recording my sessions. I’ve been considering buying an iMac 27″ i7 quadcore, but ended up putting more RAM(8GB) in my current 2.6 GHz Core Duo desktop, which along with this guide on tweaking windows to run faster for poker has helped immensely. The guide was written by a poker player and posted on the 2+2 forums. Check it out here:

I do want to get an iMac 27″ at one point I think unless I change my mind and decide to just get some other kinda machine. The thing about the iMac that rocks is obviously the design as well as the resolution. I just hate that it’s really a mac machine and windows runs off bootcamp.

For my birthday we didn’t do much. Me and Maya went out for lunch with another couple and during the evening we just came home and chilled and finished watching Scrubs season 6. I’m having a birthday party at my place this weekend. Hoping to see lots of good friends.

In this day and age it’s very normal to invite people using facebook instead of SMS and what not. The thing that sucks about that tho, is that people don’t take it as seriously even tho they RSVP’ed that they are attending an event! Usually only half the people show up!

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing tho, because at least the ones who do end up showing up are mostly the ones who really want to be there anyways :)

Just saw Memento last night, with Guy Pearce. Great movie about a guy who has short-term memory loss after losing his wife. If you haven’t seen it I can certainly recommend it.

Will update again in a few days after going on another poker heater.
