Lost 11k 2nd day of the year!

January 5, 2011 4 comments

What goes up must come down?

I guess for me this was true. I reviewed my play later and there really didn’t seem to be any huge mistakes. I definitely didn’t tilt, but just kept getting coolered or setups or other things where the timing was against me.

It’s really been a hectic start of the year for me, where huge swings seem to be the norm. Yesterday I played a guy deep at 2/4, where we had some pretty huge hands.

Heres a graph of this month so far with a couple of big hands from the match yesterday. Its all 2/4-3/6 euro and dollars.

Update on session and how I ran 6k under EV

May 19, 2010 Leave a comment

My session yesterday ended up fine. I did however manage to run 6k under EV.

I’m still pretty happy about my play. Towards the end I played against a guy who would just never fold and kept 3betting both preflop and post flop. At times he would openshove pre with mostly good ace highs. He however didn’t have any idea about how to handread so I just had to be patient untill I won all my money back and busted him.

Here’s the final hand I played against him with a graph for my session yesterday.

Hero (BB) ($2790)

SB ($767.40)

Preflop: Hero is BB with A, A

SB bets $764.40 (All-In), Hero calls $761.40

SB had 10, A (high card, Ace).

Hero had A, A (one pair, Aces).

Outcome: Hero won $1533

Losing to donks

May 18, 2010 Leave a comment

Playing the biggest donk I’ve experienced this year. This guy calls all ins with any two, goes to showdown regardless of what he has. Raises anything between 8-15bbs preflop.

Running like 6k under EV for today. Ill post a graph for today when I’m done.

How to lose 7200€ to the same opponent at 3/6€

March 25, 2010 2 comments

Had a horrible poker session last night. A guy sat down to 3-table me at 3/6€. Seemed like a competent player but clearly played in an unconventional way. I don’t want to get too much into how he played but basically he played quite nitty which is why I wish I coulda folded more big hands vs him. I’m not going to play him again tho, since he doesn’t give enough action compared to that other guy I played 14k hands against on the ipoker network. His style is nitty and doesn’t pay off often enough.

Luckily I had played poker earlier in the day with Niller and booked a 4,7k win. So this doesn’t sting as much as it could have I guess.

Here are some big hands from the session:

Insane HU opponent Blom90/Durrrr-Challenge style gogogo.

February 14, 2010 Leave a comment

My blog entry today was actually going to be about something else than poker, but yesterday I played one of the longest HU sessions I’ve ever played vs the same player.

I played the same guy for about 10k hands all in one go. During the session I went to the bathroom once and didn’t have anything to eat except some pretzels. We were playing 3 tables of  3/6£ HU, so I had a shot at really making a lot of money off this guy. I’ve played him before and taken him for quite a lot of money but yesterdays session only yielded me about 2000£. Considering we played 10k hands, I’m definately not happy with the results. My opponent is tougher than you would think. His style is very much like Blom90 back in the day actually. Making lot of big bluffs on various streets and owning me in non-SD winnings. At several points in the match yesterday I felt I was making way too many mistakes against him. My reads were off and I was making river calls vs nuts and when I did fold he showed a bluff. It would be cool if I could actually get to play 50k hands vs this guy and see how well I do.

Anyway it was a very intense match with huge swings and we were getting our money in pretty light most of the time. At one point I had a 7k stack vs his 100bb on one table and he had the same vs me on another. I’m prolly going to play him again if I see him online but not till next week. Maya was a little pissed I spent so much time playing this guy while she was here visiting(I’m an asshole I know!) so I have to try and make it up to her today. It is after all Valentines Day so a perfect chance for me to take her out somewhere nice and treat her well. Can I run good in poker and love?

Heres two graphs of my the session yesterday. I’m still up 7774$ vs him and I hope to make that number a lot bigger. I’m going to spend some time analyzing my hands with him so I’m much better equipped the next time I play him. This matchup vs him could end up being epic if I can just tweak some parts of my game so I can read him better on the river. I also posted some hands so you can get an idea of what kind of insane match this was. We were playing 3 tables HU at 3/6£. Before this Ive only played him for like 1-2k hands at 3/6$ where I’ve run significantly better.

In this last hand he showed his cards which I dont remmeber but basically he was bluffing with air. Stuff like this happened all day yesterday where I was laying down the best hand often on the river and when I did finally take a stand, I would be wrong, some of the times. Other times I was right, like the following hand:

I’ll keep you posted if I play this guy again. It should be an exciting matchup since he’s not really that easy to play but there’s definately value in playing him.

Swingy game.

I’m sorry I haven’t updated during the week. It’s been a pretty busy week for me with lot’s of poker. My goal is to at least play 240k hands this year and I’m already falling way behind schedule. Since I knew that I wouldn’t be playing that much poker this coming week because Maya is visiting and there’s the EPT Copenhagen, I figured I would put in as many hands as possible while I could, which resulted in 7800 hands/22 hours of play. Not a huge amount but still satisfactory.

The thing about Heads Up poker is that you often are just sitting and waiting for action. Sometimes 30-45min can go by before anyone plays you. Also after about 3-4 hours your concentration isn’t up at the same level as it was when you first began and you start to make more mistakes. Also the length of your session is dependant on how many people you are playing at the time etc. So sessions can vary from anything from 1 hour to 8 hours. On the other side of 4-5 hours I start looking for opportunities to end my session, but obviously if I’m playing a huge fish I won’t just leave the table. I’ll try to stay and play him until he’s bust.

Lately I’ve been having some very swingy sessions, which in part are because the players I’ve been playing are very aggressive but also due to the fact that my style(wrongly) has been too aggressive. I’ve been 3betting way too much against players with holdings, where I shouldn’t be trying to cause a lot of volatility. I’ve had discussions with McNiller, Jan and El-Kher, who are professional poker players about this and they all agreed that against a fishy aggressive player who doesn’t like to fold that much postflop, 3betting hands that don’t play too well postflop will cause you to spew. Hopefully that leak is plugged up now.

To show the swings you can experience playing HU Poker, heres a graph of my latest session that ended really well, where I was playing two very aggressive players who were 3betting 30%+ of the time. I was playing one opponent at 5/10 and another on two tables of 3/6. Both matches were around 3-4 hours. At one point I asked McNiller who was railing me to check up on the average pot for each table. The average pot on 5/10 was reportedly 350$ and 200$ on the 3/6 match. Pretty sick.

Here’s two interesting hands from the matches.

No-Limit Hold’em, $10.00 BB (2 handed) – Hold’em Manager Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

BB ($2996)

Alex (SB) ($2316)

Preflop: Alex is SB with 8, 9

Alex bets $25, BB raises $80, Alex calls $60

Flop: ($180) 7, 10, 9 (2 players)

BB bets $125, Alex calls $125

Villain has been 3betting a ton. I could easily raise for value here since I have so much equity in the pot but I know that villain likes to bet multiple barrels and I could definately get more value from him trying to represent a straight when it hits and possibly even get him to bet huge on the river.

Turn: ($430) A (2 players)

BB bets $270, Alex calls $270

The A is a fine card. I know that villain will play on it therefore increasing value for me. Of course there is also the off chance that he has an ace, but we’ll just call here instead. At this point there’s no reason to raise at all, since we’ll only get action when we are beat or in case he has a heart draw. But most of the time he will shut down depending on the size of our raise.

River: ($970) 7 (2 players)

BB bets $640, Alex raises $1831 (All-In), 1 fold

River is not really that interesting but at this point I had decided that he prolly had an ace or maybe even a T that he was trying to valuebet. River isn’t really that great a card for me to bluff on, in fact it’s pretty terrible against a good thinking player. If I had a straight on the flop I would have raised on the flop most of the time. Regardless, knowing that this player isn’t really thinking that much compared to just being hyperaggressive in general, I decide to take the chance and try and represent a full house by raising him all in hoping he folds an A.

“Unfortunately” my read was wrong and he folded pretty quickly, so he either had a T or was purely bluffing. I’m going to go with him bluffing due to how fast he folded on the river.

Total pot: $2250

Results:

Alex had 8, 9 (two pair, nines and sevens).

Outcome: Alex won $3440

No-Limit Hold’em, $6.00 BB (2 handed) – Hold’em Manager Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

BB ($2077)

Alex (SB) ($612)

Preflop: Alex is SB with K, A

Alex bets $15, BB raises $54, Alex raises $144, BB calls $102

Standard. Again – This villain is 3betting a shitload and therefore I’ve been both 4betting as bluffs and for value. Mostly for value now because he’s stopped folding to 4bets preflop.

Flop: ($324) 6, 5, Q (2 players)

BB checks, Alex checks

Against such an aggressive opponent I don’t want to get blown off the best hand on the flop, which is why I decide to exercise pot control and check the flop.

Turn: ($324) 7 (2 players)

BB checks, Alex checks

I’m pretty sure I have the best hand by now, since he checked to me twice. I don’t believe that he is going for a checkraise because I’m playing my hand pretty much face up. Also I see no reason to bet in this spot. I believe he would fold worse Ace-high hands if I do.

River: ($324) 4 (2 players)

BB bets $1915 (All-In), Alex calls $450 (All-In)

Villain makes an interesting shove on the river. You might be led to believe that he must have hit a miracle on the river. But if he had 88, he would bet the turn. Maybe 86 checks on the turn too, altho I doubt it vs this particular villain. This guy would also bet a fdraw on the turn, knowing full well that I have Ace-high and wanting to take it down right there on the turn. However – The most interesting tell that he’s bluffing is that he overbet shoves on the river, resulting in me calling with AK and taking down the pot.

Total pot: $1224

Results:

Alex had K, A (high card, Ace).

BB had 10, J (high card, Queen).

Outcome: Alex won $1223
